Chronology

Followed by The Flintstone Comedy Show

Fred and Barney Meet the Shmoo was an American animated TV show. It aired on NBC from December 1979 to November 1980. This show was a "package show," meaning it combined episodes from different cartoons into one long program. It was also a "spin-off" from the popular The Flintstones cartoon.

The show was produced by Hanna-Barbera, a famous animation studio. It lasted for one season with 17 episodes. Each episode was 90 minutes long.

What Was Fred and Barney Meet the Shmoo?

This TV show was unique because it brought together characters from different cartoons. It combined episodes from Fred and Barney Meet the Thing and The New Shmoo. Even though the show's title suggested they would meet, the characters from these different segments rarely appeared together.

The main characters, Fred Flintstone, Barney Rubble, Thing, and Shmoo, only met in short clips. These clips were called "bumpers" and played between the different cartoon segments.

The Different Parts of the Show

Fred and Barney Meet the Shmoo was made up of three separate cartoon segments:

  • The New Fred and Barney Show: This was a new version of The Flintstones. It showed the prehistoric adventures of Fred, Barney, and their families. Each episode was 30 minutes long.
  • The Thing: This segment was based on the Marvel Comics superhero called Thing. He is a rocky, orange superhero. Each episode of this part was 11 minutes long.
  • The New Shmoo: This cartoon featured a character named Shmoo. Shmoo is a friendly, blob-like creature from the Li'l Abner comic strip. This segment was originally a 30-minute show on its own. For Fred and Barney Meet the Shmoo, it was often split into two shorter parts.

Did the Characters Ever Team Up?

While the main characters didn't often team up in this show, Shmoo later joined Fred and Barney. In 1980–81, they worked together as part-time police officers. This happened in the "Bedrock Cops" segments of The Flintstone Comedy Show.

Special Broadcasts

During its run, Fred and Barney Meet the Shmoo also showed a special cartoon. It was called The Harlem Globetrotters Meet Snow White. This special aired in four parts over four Saturdays in 1980. It had no story connection to Fred, Barney, or Shmoo.

Laugh Tracks in Cartoons

Like many cartoons from Hanna-Barbera in the 1970s, this show used a "laugh track." A laugh track is recorded laughter that is added to a TV show. It makes it sound like a live audience is watching and laughing along. This was one of the last Hanna-Barbera shows to use this feature.

Who Voiced the Characters?

Many talented voice actors brought these characters to life. Here are some of the main voices you would hear:
