Dino is a super fun pet dinosaur from the famous cartoon show The Flintstones. He belongs to the main characters, Fred and Wilma Flintstone. Dino first appeared in the very first episode of The Flintstones. But he wasn't called "Dino" until the fourth episode, "No Help Wanted". A famous voice actor named Mel Blanc gave Dino his sounds for many years.

What Kind of Pet is Dino?

In The Flintstones, Dino acts just like a pet dog. He shows all the things a typical family dog would do.

Dino is a type of dinosaur called a Snorkasaurus. He's not a giant dinosaur, but he's a bit bigger than the people in the show. He's much smaller than the huge mammoths and other big dinosaurs used as work animals in the series.

Dino's Personality and Fun Moments

Dino is very playful and loving. A funny thing that happens often is when Fred comes home from work. Dino gets so excited that he knocks Fred over and licks his face! Even though Fred tries to stop him, he usually gives in to Dino's happy, wet kisses.

Dino often shows human feelings. He almost seems to talk sometimes! He can also get angry, growling and snapping, especially when Fred tries to tell a lie. Dino always seems to know when Fred isn't telling the truth. He also loves to play with the kids, Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm.

In one episode called "Hop Happy," Dino meets Hoppy, the Rubbles' new pet hopperoo. At first, Dino and Fred are scared, thinking Hoppy is a giant mouse. But they soon become best friends after Hoppy helps Dino rescue their owners from an accident.

Dino's Love Life

Even though Dino usually focuses on playing, he had a couple of romantic adventures!

  • In the episode "Dino Goes Hollyrock," Dino falls in love with a female TV star dinosaur named "Sassie." She's like a dinosaur version of the famous dog Lassie. Dino even becomes her co-star on her TV show!
  • In another episode, "Dino and Juliet," Dino falls in love with his new neighbor's female dinosaur, Juliet. Their romance leads to the birth of 15 little dinosaur puppies! This also helps Fred and his new neighbor, Mr. Loudrock, become friends.

Dino's Early Appearances

Dino was shown a bit differently in an early episode called "The Snorkasaurus Hunter." In this episode, Fred and Barney Rubble go camping to hunt a snorkasaurus. Unlike the usual Dino, the snorkasaurus in this episode could talk and acted more like a person. At the end of the episode, the Flintstones take in this dinosaur. He acts like a butler, answering the phone and doing chores! This early Dino was also a bit bigger and walked on his back legs. His color changed from pink to red in early episodes, but after "The Snorkasaurus Hunter," he was always purple and acted like a dog.

The show later explained how Dino joined the family in the episode "Dino Disappears." Wilma said Dino followed Fred home because Fred was playing with him. Fred said he was just trying to chase him away!

Dino in Other Shows and Movies

Dino appeared in most of the cartoon shows that came after the original Flintstones series. However, in the first season of The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, Dino was replaced by a small mammoth named Wooly. But Dino came back as a regular character in the next show, The Flintstone Comedy Hour.

In the 1980s show The Flintstone Comedy Show, Dino had his own cartoon segments called "Dino and Cavemouse." In these, Dino tried very hard to catch a tricky mouse in the Flintstone house, much like Tom and Jerry.

Dino also appeared as a puppy in the 1986-1988 series The Flintstone Kids. He even had his own segments called "Dino's Dilemmas." Later, he was Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm's babysitter in the 1996 show Cave Kids. Dino also starred in two short cartoons of his own: Dino: Stay Out! (1995) and Dino: The Great Egg-Scape (1997).

More recently, Dino is featured in the 2020 series Yabba-Dabba Dinosaurs. This show, like Cave Kids, focuses on the adventures of Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm, with Dino joining them in the Stone Age.

Dino also appeared in the two live-action Flintstones movies.

  • In the first movie, The Flintstones (1994), Dino was created using both computer graphics and a puppet made by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. His sounds were taken from the original cartoon.
  • In the second movie, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000), Dino has more screen time and appears as a puppy. In this movie, Fred wins Dino's egg as a prize at a carnival. The egg hatches on a ferris wheel, and baby Dino immediately thinks Fred is his mom! This is different from how Dino joined the family in the original cartoon show.

Dino also made quick appearances without speaking in the cartoon show Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.

Dino's Voice Actors

Dino's barks and sounds were first made by Mel Blanc for 29 years, from 1960 to 1989. Old recordings of Blanc's voice were even used for Dino in the live-action movies.
