The Flintstone Comedy Hour was an American animated TV show. It was a spin-off from the popular shows The Flintstones and The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show. The famous animation studio Hanna-Barbera created it. The show first aired on CBS on September 9, 1972.
The show was later renamed The Flintstone Comedy Show for its second season. This version was a shorter, half-hour show that mostly showed reruns. It aired from September 8, 1973, to January 26, 1974.
About the Show
The first season of The Flintstone Comedy Hour was an hour long. It had different parts to keep viewers entertained.
- It featured two short cartoons with Fred and Barney.
- There was also one short cartoon starring the characters from The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show.
- The show included quick jokes and horoscopes.
- A new band called The Bedrock Rockers performed two songs in each episode.
The second half of the show featured four brand new episodes. It also showed reruns of The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show. Many characters from The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show appeared here. These included Moonrock, Penny, Wiggy, "Bad-luck" Schleprock, Cindy, Fabian, and the Bronto Bunch. The Bronto Bunch included characters named Bronto, Noodles, Stub, and Zonk.
Mickey Stevens took over as the voice of Pebbles for four new episodes. She also voiced Pebbles in the short segments between cartoons. The previous voice actor, Sally Struthers, was busy with her role on the TV show All in the Family. This show was the last time Alan Reed voiced Fred Flintstone. He passed away in 1977.
For the 1973–74 TV season, CBS changed the show. They removed the Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show episodes. They repackaged the first half-hour parts of The Flintstone Comedy Hour. This new version was called The Flintstone Comedy Show. It aired as reruns. The short cartoons with Fred and Barney, and the Bedrock Rockers songs, were later shown on another TV series. This series was called Fred Flintstone and Friends in 1977–78. The show continued to be rebroadcast on channels like USA Cartoon Express, Cartoon Network, and Boomerang.
Like many cartoons from Hanna-Barbera in the 1970s, this show used a laugh track. This added recorded laughter to the show.
The Bedrock Rockers Band
The Bedrock Rockers was a cool band from the show. Each member played an instrument:
- Pebbles Flintstone played the keyboard.
- Bamm-Bamm Rubble played the bass.
- Moonrock Crater played the drums.
- Penny Pillar played the tambourine.
- Wiggy Rockstone played the flute.
They performed two songs in every episode. Some of their songs included:
- "Sunshine Man"
- "Summertime Girl"
- "Oh, How I Love You"
- "Keep in Time"
- "It Should Always Be Saturday"
- "Hop, Skip and a Jump"
- "Flying So High"
- "Yabba Dabba Doozie"
- "Shadow, Shadow"
- "Being With You"
- "Singing Song"
- "Song of the Season"
- "What's Your Sign?"
- "Sunny Sun Day"
- "Rock N Roll Circus"
The songs were written by different people from Screen Gems. The actual singers for the songs were a group called The Ron Hicklin Singers.
