The Flintstones: On the Rocks is a fun animated movie from 2001. It was made for TV and features your favorite characters from The Flintstones! This movie first aired on Cartoon Network on November 3, 2001. It was directed by Chris Savino and David Smith. The film was also a special tribute to Hoyt Curtin and William Hanna. They were very important people behind The Flintstones show.
This movie was the only Flintstones project made by Cartoon Network Studios. This happened after Hanna-Barbera, the original studio, joined Warner Bros. Animation. The movie was designed to feel like the first seasons of the 1960s TV show. It focused more on the friendships and relationships of Fred, Barney, Wilma, and Betty.
You might not find this movie on DVD or Blu-ray. It has not been officially released for home viewing since it first aired.
What's the Story?
Fred and Wilma Flintstone's marriage is having some problems. Wilma is getting tired of Fred's behavior. Meanwhile, Barney and Betty Rubble are very happy together. The Flintstones even visit a family therapist, but it doesn't go well.
On Fred and Wilma's anniversary, which they both forgot, the Rubbles plan a trip. They decide to go to a place called Rockapulco. They hope this trip will help Fred and Wilma fix their marriage.
A Diamond Mix-Up
Soon after they arrive, a thief named Xavier steals a diamond. A guard chases him into the same hotel where the Flintstones are staying. During the chase, Xavier's bag gets mixed up with Wilma's bag. He quickly starts planning how to get his diamond back.
At first, things are still rough between Fred and Wilma. Wilma gets very upset and almost decides to divorce Fred. But then she finds the diamond in her suitcase! She thinks Fred bought it as a surprise gift. Wilma quickly makes up with him, feeling happy.
Fred pretends he bought the diamond to keep Wilma happy. Their new happiness doesn't last long, though. Fred's old habits start to bother Wilma again. Xavier, the thief, sees this happening. He decides to pretend to be a charming Englishman. He invites Wilma to dinner to try and get the diamond back. Wilma accepts his invitation.
The Chase for the Diamond
Fred feels bad and wants to make things right with Wilma. But he sees her with Xavier from a distance. Fred gets very sad and goes to the bar. Wilma, meanwhile, turns down Xavier's advances. She wants to be loyal to Fred. But then she sees Fred talking to another woman at the bar. This makes her change her mind.
While dancing, Xavier shows his true colors. He tries to take the diamond from Wilma, who is wearing it as a necklace. A big chase begins in the ballroom. Fred, Barney, and Xavier all try to get the diamond. Finally, it falls back into Wilma's hands. Xavier then grabs Wilma and drives away in his car.
The car chase leads to a bridge over a volcano. Xavier threatens Wilma if she doesn't give him the diamond. Fred arrives and gives a heartfelt speech. He tells Wilma he realizes he is the richest man in the world just by having her.
Fred tries to stop Xavier, but Xavier punches Fred, making him unconscious. Wilma then bravely stops Xavier herself. He is arrested by the same woman Fred spoke with at the bar. She turns out to be a policewoman tracking Xavier!
With their marriage saved, Fred and Wilma enjoy the rest of their trip. Barney and Betty, seeing Fred and Wilma's passion, start to argue a little about their own marriage. In a funny scene during the end credits, Dino, who was supposed to guard their home, has made a huge mess! He left the house to his friends and went on his own trip.
