Zelda was the only person in her family who was short-statured. She was about 4 feet 3 inches (1.30 m) tall. This was because of a problem with her anterior pituitary gland. This gland makes growth hormone.
Zelda did not feel comfortable with her height until she was an adult. In an interview, she said she had a "rough childhood." But she learned to speak up for herself. She said she learned to "meet everyone head-on."
Rubinstein won a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh. There, she earned a degree in bacteriology. She also joined the sorority Phi Sigma Sigma. At age 25, she moved to Berkeley, California. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley. She also worked as a medical lab technician at blood banks.

After Poltergeist, Zelda kept acting in movies and on TV. She often played characters who had special psychic abilities. She also narrated the scary TV show Scariest Places on Earth. This show was on ABC Family in the U.S.
