Early Life and Education
Christopher Savino was born and grew up in Royal Oak, Michigan. He went to Dondero High School. He is one of ten children in his family, with five sisters and four brothers. He has said that the cartoon Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures was a big influence on him. He liked how its animation style was different from other cartoons in the 1980s.
Artistic Influences and Inspirations
Savino has mentioned many artists and cartoonists who inspired his work. These include Cliff Sterrett, Charles M. Schulz (who created Peanuts), Jim Davis (who created Garfield), and Bill Watterson (who created Calvin and Hobbes). He also admired animation legends like Max Fleischer and Chuck Jones. While he enjoyed watching cartoons, he said that comic books were what truly captured his interest.
Career Highlights and New Ventures
Savino started working in the animation world in 1991. He has worked for major studios like Nickelodeon Animation Studios, Hanna-Barbera, Cartoon Network Studios, and Disney Television Animation. He was a main director for the later seasons of shows like Dexter's Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls. He also wrote for The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy and Mickey Mouse.
In June 2014, Nickelodeon decided to turn his short film The Loud House into a full TV series. The show first aired on May 2, 2016.
After his animation career, Savino moved into writing. On November 1, 2019, he released his first children's novel, Coal: A Cautionary Christmas Tale. In December of the same year, he published the first part of his graphic novel series called Bigfoot & Gray. On March 3, 2020, he released a non-fiction book. This book is a guide for writing cartoons and is titled Writing Cartoons in 4 Acts (Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Midpoint). Since January 5, 2020, he also creates a Sunday comic strip called For Brothers.
