Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil (often just called Kick Buttowski) is an exciting American animated television series created by Sandro Corsaro. It was made by Disney Television Animation and first aired on February 13, 2010. This show was the fourth original series for Disney XD and the very first animated one, launching exactly one year after the channel started.

The series ran for two seasons, with the second season starting on April 30, 2011. Each episode usually has two shorter 11-minute stories, making a total of 52 episodes (or 104 segments). The show wrapped up on September 22, 2012.

What is Kick Buttowski About?

The show follows a brave young boy named Clarence Francis "Kick" Buttowski. He dreams of becoming the greatest daredevil in the world! Luckily, he has his loyal best friend, Gunther, by his side to help him with his wild stunts and adventures.

Meet the Characters

"Our big challenge was finding a voice for the character that can sustain a lot of stories, through numerous episodes," explains Coleman. "We want to look at the characters far beyond a TV show, as a new character in the canon of Disney characters and find the right balance between comedy and action. One of the things that we are excited about is the fact that it's a total brand fit for us. It's a great companion piece for our hit show Phineas and Ferb—and has some of the same underlying themes of friendship and determination."

Main Characters

  • Clarence Francis "Kick" Buttowski (voiced by Charlie Schlatter) is a 10-year-old boy who loves thrills and often takes big risks. His main goal is to live every day like it's his own personal action movie. He's so dedicated to being a stuntman that he finds it hard to pass up any chance to do a stunt, even if it's dangerous. But deep down, he's a good kid who usually does the right thing if his risky behavior goes too far. He's surprisingly good at stunts for his age, even if some don't go as planned. Kick is short and always wears his special daredevil outfit: a white jumpsuit with red stripes, a white helmet with a red stripe, and yellow boots and gloves. Some of his famous sayings are "It's show time," "Fail? I don't do fail," and "Aw, biscuits." He's the middle child in his family and often gets picked on by his older brother, Brad.
  • Gunther Magnuson (voiced by Matt Jones) is Kick's 11-year-old best friend and his stunt helper. Gunther is a bit chubby, often worried, and easily gets distracted by shiny things. Unlike Kick, he doesn't really enjoy living life on the edge, but he's always there to support his friend. He comes from a Viking family who own a very popular restaurant called "BattleSnax." When Gunther gets serious or angry, his Viking side really shows, and it can be quite intimidating!
  • Bradley "Brad" Buttowski (voiced by Danny Cooksey) is Kick's 17-year-old older brother. He loves to bully and tease Kick and Gunther. When their parents are away, Brad is in charge. He also has pretty bad personal hygiene and thinks he's super popular. His own catchphrase is "Yeah, Brad." Brad often tries to impress girls but usually fails. He's good at manipulating people, especially his parents, to get out of trouble or get others into it, though his plans sometimes backfire.

Other Important Characters

  • Brianna Buttowski (voiced by Grey DeLisle) is Kick's spoiled 7-year-old younger sister. She's known for being a "pageant girl" and usually gets her way by saying "I want..." She enjoys annoying Kick but sometimes works with him, as long as it's her idea.
  • Harold Buttowski (voiced by Brian Stepanek) is Kick's dad. He's usually cheerful but gets very nervous about possible dangers. He loves his old car, "Monique," and is obsessed with his wife's homemade cookies.
  • Honey Buttowski (voiced by Kari Wahlgren) is Kick's mom. She's very caring and supportive of Kick's daredevil nature, sometimes even helping him with his stunts. It's revealed she used to be a famous daredevil herself!
  • Wade (voiced by Eric Christian Olsen) is a friendly, clumsy gas station worker who is friends with Kick.
  • Billy Stumps (voiced by Jeff Bennett) is a famous extreme daredevil and one of Kick's biggest idols. He's missing his left hand, likely from a stunt.
  • Magnus Magnuson (voiced by Clancy Brown) and Helga Magnuson (voiced by April Winchell) are Gunther's Viking parents who own the "BattleSnax" restaurant.
  • Kendall Perkins (voiced by Emily Osment) is Kick's classmate and one of his rivals. She's very smart and was class president, but can be bossy and arrogant. She and Kick often argue, but they also seem to like each other.
  • Mr. Vickle (voiced by John DiMaggio) is Kick's next-door neighbor, a friendly adult who isn't usually bothered by Kick's antics.
  • "Wacky" Jackie Wackerman (voiced by Maria Bamford) is a super energetic new kid who becomes obsessed with Kick, calling herself his "number one fan."
  • Pantsy (voiced by Harland Williams) is one of Brad's friends and a strict assistant manager at the movie theater. He's also Mouth's older brother.
  • Mouth (voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz) is Kick and Gunther's classmate and frenemy. He's Pantsy's younger brother and loves to scheme.
  • Charlotte Chicarelli (voiced by Mindy Sterling) is another next-door neighbor who always complains about Kick and other kids causing trouble.
  • Oskar is Charlotte Chicarelli's dog, who loves to bite Kick's butt! They usually don't get along, but sometimes show a surprising friendship.
  • Ronaldo (voiced by Simon Helberg) is another of Kick's rivals. He's a physics-obsessed bully who tries to win by following scientific rules.
  • Cousin Kyle (voiced by Tom Kenny) is Kick's talkative and not-so-smart cousin who often gets in the way of Kick's stunts.
  • Gordie Gibble (voiced by Will Forte) is Kick's main rival from West Mellowbrook. He's a former BMX legend from a rich family.

How the Show Was Made

Getting Started

Creator Sandro Corsaro first thought of the character in 2002, inspired by his own childhood. Kick was originally going to be called "Kid Knievel" as a tribute to the famous daredevil Evel Knievel, but the name was changed for legal reasons. Many of the funny characters and places in the show were inspired by Corsaro's hometown of Stoneham, Massachusetts.

Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil officially began production on December 19, 2008, still under the name Kid Knievel. The title was changed to Kick Buttowski on April 4, 2009. The show's stunt coordinator was Robbie Knievel, Evel Knievel's son, which is pretty cool!

The first ideas for the show were written by Devin Bunje and Nick Stanton, who later worked on another Disney XD series, Zeke and Luther. Their pilot script was actually split into the first two episodes of the series: "Dead Man's Drop" and "Stumped."

Full Production Details

In January 2010, it was announced that the series would premiere on Disney XD on February 13, 2010. This was exactly one year after Disney XD launched.

Because the show was so popular, Disney XD ordered a second season in June 2010, which premiered on April 30, 2011.

Animation Style

The animation for Kick Buttowski was created using Toon Boom Animation software, and some parts of the show even used 3D animation to make the stunts look extra awesome!

Where and When it Aired

Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil was originally planned to air in November 2009, but Disney decided to launch it in February 2010 instead. The show officially debuted on Disney XD on February 13, 2010, at 8:30 a.m. ET. You could see sneak peeks and promos for the show on Disney XD, DisneyXD.com, and even Disney Channel before it aired.

The series also had special airings on Disney Channel. For example, on April 2, 2010, it was shown as part of the "Get Animated" marathon. It also became part of Disney Channel's "Toonin' Saturdays" block in June 2011.

The final episodes of Kick Buttowski aired on September 22, 2012. Even after the show ended, reruns still pop up on Disney XD sometimes!
