About Freddie Jackson
Early Life and Music Start (1956–1980)
Freddie Jackson grew up in Harlem, a part of New York City. He began singing gospel music at a young age in church. There, he met Paul Laurence, who later became his music producer and songwriting partner.
After finishing school, Jackson joined Laurence's music group, LJE (Laurence Jones Ensemble). They performed in nightclubs around New York. In the late 1970s, Jackson moved to the West Coast. He became the lead singer for a band called Mystic Merlin. He released three albums with them between 1980 and 1982. Soon after, he returned to New York to work with Paul Laurence again.
Becoming a Solo Star (1981–2013)
Freddie Jackson sang on demo recordings of songs written by Paul Laurence. Demos are like early versions of songs. He also sang backup for singer Melba Moore after she saw him perform in 1981.
In 1984, Jackson signed a record deal with Capitol Records. He released his first album, Rock Me Tonight, in 1985. The song "Rock Me Tonight" quickly became a huge hit on the R&B music charts. It stayed at number one for six weeks. This made Freddie Jackson very popular on urban radio stations.
His song "You Are My Lady" also reached number one on the R&B chart. It was his highest-charting song on the Billboard Hot 100 list, reaching number 12. Other songs from the album, like "He'll Never Love You (Like I Do)," were also very popular. The Rock Me Tonight album topped the R&B album charts and sold over a million copies, earning a "platinum" award.
Jackson released his next album, Just Like the First Time, in 1986. This album also sold over a million copies. He continued to have many number one R&B hits. These included "Tasty Love," "Have You Ever Loved Somebody," and "Jam Tonight." He also had a number one duet with Melba Moore called "A Little Bit More."
His success continued with the 1988 album Don't Let Love Slip Away. This album had two more number one R&B songs: "Hey Lover" and "Nice 'N' Slow." In 1990, the title track of his album Do Me Again and "Love Me Down" also reached number one.
In 1989, Freddie Jackson appeared on the TV show The Golden Girls. He played a lounge singer and sang "It's a Small World". He also sang the duet "Love Survives" with Irene Cara for the movie All Dogs Go to Heaven.
After 1993, Jackson left Capitol Records and signed with RCA Records. He released the album Here It Is in 1994. He later released a Christmas album. After that, he released Private Party in 1995.
After a few quiet years, he released Life After 30 in 1999. Then came Live in Concert in 2000. He returned to the charts with It's Your Move in 2004. His tenth studio album, Transitions, came out in 2006. In 2010, he released For You, which included the song "I Don't Wanna Go."
