Frederick Francis John Greenfield (born May 10, 1850 – died October 25, 1900) was an English man who was both a talented cricketer and a priest in the Church of England. He was born in Gorakhpur, which is now part of Uttar Pradesh, India.

A Talented Cricketer

Greenfield went to Hurstpierpoint and Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he also played cricket. He played for Sussex and was their team captain twice. His first time as captain was from 1876 to 1878, and then again from 1881 to 1882.

He also played for Cambridge University from 1874 to 1876. He was even the captain for Cambridge University in 1876.

Frederick Greenfield played in 85 important cricket matches, known as first-class matches, between 1873 and 1884. He was a right-handed batsman. He also bowled with his right arm, using a slow, roundarm style. He scored a total of 2,549 runs in his career. His highest score in a single game was 126 runs. He also took 111 wickets, with his best bowling performance being seven wickets for only 26 runs.

Life as a Priest

In 1879, Greenfield became a priest in the Church of England. After working in different church roles, called curacies, he became a chaplain. From 1884 to 1891, he was a chaplain for the Poor Law Union in Cuckfield, West Sussex. This group helped people in need. He was also a chaplain at the Sussex county asylum from 1885 to 1890. This was a place that cared for people with mental health challenges.

Moving to South Africa and Final Years

Later, Frederick Greenfield moved to South Africa. From 1896 until 1900, he was the headmaster of a school near Dundee, Natal.

In 1900, during the Second Boer War, he was taken prisoner by the Boers. Sadly, he died from a lung illness called pleurisy.
