History of Freedom
Early Settlement and Naming
The area where Freedom is now located was once part of the Plymouth Patent. This was a large piece of land granted to early settlers. In 1794, a soldier from the American Revolutionary War, Stephen Smith, settled here.
At first, the area was called Smithstown Plantation. Later, it was known as Beaver Hill Plantation. During the War of 1812, the town officially became a town on June 11, 1813. It was given the name Freedom, which had a special meaning related to politics at the time.
Growth and Industries
In 1836, Freedom Academy was started, providing education for the community. The town's population changed over the years. In 1870, there were 716 people, and by 1880, the population was 652.
Farmers in Freedom mainly grew hay and potatoes. Sandy Stream, which gets its water from Sandy and Duck ponds, was very important. It provided water power for the town's early factories and mills.
Local industries included a flour mill, a corn mill, and a sawmill that cut long pieces of lumber. There was also a mill for shingles and a factory that made shovel handles. Other businesses included a mill for carding (preparing wool), a clothing and woolen mill, and a tannery for making leather.
