Frenchville sits at the bottom of Mount Archer. This mountain is part of the Berserker Range. The suburb is about seven kilometres north of the Fitzroy River.

The area was named after Anthelme Thozet. He was a French botanist. Thozet was the first director of the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens in the 1860s. He was very interested in plants.

Thozet studied native Australian plants. He learned how Indigenous people, like the Darumbal clans, used them. He even started his own plant nursery. This nursery was in North Rockhampton.

Frenchmans Creek also runs through the area. It was named after Thozet too. This creek flows into the Fitzroy River.

You can find a shopping area on Dean Street. It's between Kerrigan Street and Gair Street.
