Where is Koongal?
Koongal is situated near a small part of the Fitzroy River. A main road, the Rockhampton–Emu Park Road, also runs through the suburb.
Old Railway Station
There used to be a railway station in Koongal. It was on the old North Rockhampton to Emu Park railway line. This station is no longer in use.

Koongal has an interesting history with many important events.
Early Churches in Koongal
The Anglican Church of St John the Evangelist opened in 1914. It was located on Harbourne Street and served the community until 1977.
Later, the St Maria Goretti Catholic Church opened in 1958. This church was on Thozet Road. It closed its doors in 2017.
Mount Archer State School Opens
Mount Archer State School welcomed its first students on January 25, 1982. This school has been an important part of the community ever since.
Enid O'Toole Park
In September 2000, Enid O'Toole Park was officially opened. This park was named after Enid O'Toole, a local woman from Rockhampton. She was one of the first female bank managers in Queensland, which was a big step for women in banking.
Bushfires and Cyclones
Koongal was badly affected by bushfires in October 2009. These fires started in the Mount Archer National Park. One home in Poinciana Street was destroyed.
In 2015, Cyclone Marcia caused damage in Koongal. The roof of the Rockonia Road Store was torn off by strong winds. Luckily, the store was quickly fixed and reopened.
Discovering Historical Graves
In 2010, something exciting was found in Koongal. After a special study, the graves of a famous Australian botanist, Anthelme Thozet, his son, and his daughter-in-law were discovered. They were found in Norris Park. This park was once part of Thozet's large experimental garden called "Muellerville."

There are no high schools directly in Koongal. Students usually attend North Rockhampton State High School. This school is in the nearby suburb of Frenchville.
