The Common is a special parkland area in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. It is known as a "suburb" but has very few or no people living there. In 2021, the census showed that The Common had "no people or a very low population." It is mostly made up of natural areas and important city facilities.

Exploring The Common's Location

The Common is located on the north side of Rockhampton, right next to the Fitzroy River. It is separated from the main city center by the river. The northern edge of The Common follows an old railway line and the Rockhampton–Emu Park Road. The river forms its eastern, southern, and western borders.

River Features in The Common

The Fitzroy River has some interesting spots here.

  • Devils Elbow is a sharp bend in the river at the north-eastern part of The Common.
  • Fishing Point is the southernmost tip of the area, also along the Fitzroy River.

Kalka: A Small Neighbourhood

Within The Common, there is a small area called Kalka. This neighbourhood is roughly in the center of the suburb.

The eastern part of The Common is quite marshy and remains undeveloped. In the northern section, you'll find the city's landfill and a sewage treatment plant. The western and southern parts of the suburb are home to various recreational facilities.

The Common has a history tied to transportation and city services.

The Old Railway Line

An old railway line, called the North Rockhampton to Emu Park railway line, used to run through The Common. This line was a branch of the main North Coast railway line. It was built to help people from Rockhampton easily travel to the seaside town of Emu Park for fun. The railway officially opened on December 22, 1888.

The main station for this branch line in Rockhampton was the North Rockhampton railway station, located on the north-western edge of The Common. There was also another station called Kalka railway station within the area. Over the years, parts of the line were closed. Since 2007, the line now ends at Lakes Creek.

City Services Begin

The North Rockhampton Sewage Treatment Plant, an important facility for managing the city's wastewater, started operating in 1986.

The city's landfill, where rubbish is disposed of, is located at 152 Lakes Creek Road.

The Common offers many places for sports and outdoor activities.

  • Cyril Connell Fields is in the south-west. It has large grassy fields for sports and areas where you can have picnics.
  • Callaghan Park Racecourse is at 75 Reaney Street. This is where horse races are held.
  • Rockhampton Cricket Club is a place for playing cricket.
  • Norbridge Park is near Fishing Point. It also offers grassy sports fields and picnic spots.
  • Fitzroy River Hack and Pony Club is at 50 Reaney Street. This club is for horse riding and pony activities.

Boat Ramp for River Access

There is a boat ramp and a floating walkway at Robert Clark Drive. This allows people to easily launch boats and access the Fitzroy River for boating and fishing. The Rockhampton Regional Council manages this ramp.
