Where is Frenstat?

Frenstat is located in central Texas. It is about 15 miles north of Burton. The community is also nine miles south of Caldwell, which is the main town in Burleson County. Frenstat sits along Farm to Market Road 2774 near a stream called Big Creek. It is about 7 miles northwest of Somerville.

A Look at Frenstat's Past

The area around Frenstat was first settled in the mid-1830s. The community of Frenstat itself was started in 1884. It was founded by Catholic families from Moravia, a region in what is now the Czech Republic. They named the town Frenstat after their home area, Frenstat pod Radhostem.

By 1886, about 40 Czech families lived in the area. Some of these families had moved from nearby Caldwell. Frenstat had its own post office from 1891 to 1908. In the late 1800s, there was also a general store and a cotton gin. A cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds.

In 1889, the settlers built the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. This church is still standing today. It was built on land given by Adolph Polansky. It was the very first Catholic Church in Burleson County. In 1892 and the 1940s, the population of Frenstat was estimated to be around 25 people. By 1931, there were about 85 Czech families living in the area. By the late 1900s, Frenstat was mostly made up of a few farms, a community center, and the church.

Learning in Frenstat
