Freshwater East is a small village in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Most of the village sits on a cliff, looking out over a beautiful bay. It's about 7 miles (11 km) from Pembroke by road. The village is part of the Lamphey area. Freshwater East has a special Green Coast Award Beach, which means it's a clean and natural beach.

History of Freshwater East

People have lived near Freshwater East for a very long time. There's evidence of ancient people living to the east of the village. Freshwater appeared on maps as early as 1578, shown as a place along the coast.

The bay's old Welsh name is Porth Lliw. This name is still sometimes used today.

Later on, ships would visit the area to get fresh water from a stream. This is how the place got its name, Freshwater. In the Victorian era, it became a popular spot for people to go swimming. Before 1850, maps already showed the beach as Freshwater East. At that time, there wasn't much of a village, just a large house called Portclew and a chapel.

In 1860, exciting horse races were held right on the beach! According to the 2011 census, about 250 people live in Freshwater East.

Location and Nature

Freshwater East is located along the Wales Coast Path, a long walking trail that goes all around the coast of Wales. It's also part of the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. This park protects the stunning coastline and countryside.

To the west of the village, you'll find Trewent Point. This area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This means it's a protected place because of its important plants, animals, or unique geology. It covers about 64 hectares (158 acres).

Things to Do and See

You can get to Freshwater East by bus, and there's a train station nearby in Lamphey. Trains stop there if you ask.

The beach at Freshwater East is very popular. It's great for surfing in winter when the waves are bigger. In summer, it's a fantastic spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. There's a cafe where you can get snacks, along with toilets and parking.

The village also has a place called The Freshwater Inn, where you can get food. The sand dunes behind the beach are known as The Burrows. These dunes are a special nature reserve, which means they are protected to help local wildlife and plants thrive.
