Exploring Friendsville's Geography
Friendsville covers about 0.91 square miles (2.36 square kilometers) of land. There's no water area within the town limits. The Youghiogheny River flows right through Friendsville. This river is very popular for whitewater kayaking and rafting, especially a part called the 'Upper Yough' run.
Friendsville's History
Friendsville gets its name from its first European settler, John Friend. He arrived in what is now Garrett County before the American Revolution. Many of John Friend's family members still live in Garrett County today. Because of this strong connection, the Friend Family Association has its main office and library in Friendsville.
Getting Around Friendsville
The easiest way to get to Friendsville is by road. Interstate 68 passes through the town. You can get on or off I-68 at the exit for Maryland Route 42. Another road, Maryland Route 742, also goes through Friendsville. It follows the older path of MD 42 through the middle of town.
