Funšterc facts for kids

Funšterc is a special Slovenian dish. It's like a thick, fluffy omelette. People also call it knapovsko sonce (which means "coalminer's sun") or knapovska torta ("coalminer's cake"). Sometimes, it's just called "šmorn." This tasty dish comes from the Central Sava Valley in Slovenia.

What is Funšterc?

Funšterc was a very important food for coal miners and their families long ago. Eggs were not common for everyone because life was hard. So, having a dish with eggs was a real treat!

This omelette had to be thick and round. It was also soft and puffy. It looked bright yellow, just like the sun. Miners worked deep underground and rarely saw the sun. So, this dish brought a little bit of sunshine into their lives. They would sometimes take funšterc into the mines to eat during their breaks, but only on special days.

How is Funšterc Made?

Making funšterc is quite simple. You mix white flour with water, eggs, and a little salt. This mixture is then poured into a baking pan. Finally, it is baked until it's golden and fluffy.

People often added other ingredients to funšterc to make it even more delicious or to use what they had.
