Funassyi (pronounced Foo-nah-shee) is a super energetic, unofficial mascot from Funabashi City, Japan. Imagine a rock-star who looks like a giant pear! That's Funassyi. His main job is to help people learn about and love Funabashi City. He's a talented singer, dancer, and a talking pear. Funassyi started as a project by a resident of Funabashi. Today, Funassyi is a very famous yuru-chara in Japan. A yuru-chara is a special type of mascot character. Even though he is popular, Funabashi City has not yet made him their official mascot.
What Makes Funassyi Special?
Funassyi has a very unique personality! He talks in a high-pitched, squeaky voice called a falsetto. At the end of his sentences, he often shouts "Nasshi!" This is a play on words, as "nashi" means "pear" in Japanese. He also likes to make a strange sound, "Hyahha-!" Funassyi is known for his wild, bouncy movements and his fun, loud personality.
Funassyi's Journey to Fame
Funassyi's rise to fame was quite fast. Here are some important moments in his career:
- 2011.11 Funassyi started sharing messages on Twitter.
- 2012.6 He attended his first public event.
- 2012.11 Funassyi ranked very low in the Yuru-chara Grand Prix, a big mascot competition. But he didn't give up!
- 2013.2 He appeared in a TV commercial with other characters. After this, he started appearing on TV often and became very famous.
- 2013.7 Funassyi debuted as a voice actor in an animation called "Nyuru Nyuru!! KAKUSEN-kun." A documentary film about him, "Funanomics," was also released on DVD.
- 2013.8 He won a national contest for regional characters. This showed how popular he had become!
- 2013.11 His first song, "Funa Funa Funassyi," was released on CD.
