Understanding Futrono's Population
How Many People Live Here?
To find out how many people live in a place, governments do something called a census. A census counts all the people and collects information about them. According to the 2002 census, Futrono had about 14,981 people living there.
City vs. Countryside Living
Of these residents, about 8,399 people lived in the urban areas, which means in the city itself. The other 6,582 people lived in rural areas, which are the countryside parts of the commune. This means more people live in the city part of Futrono than in the surrounding rural areas.
Population Growth
Between 1992 and 2002, Futrono's population grew by 6.6%. This shows that more people moved to or were born in Futrono during that time.
How Futrono is Governed
Local Government Structure
As a commune, Futrono has its own local government. This government is run by a municipal council. Think of it like a local school board, but for the whole city and its surrounding areas.
The Mayor of Futrono
The head of the municipal council is called an alcalde, which is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people of Futrono in an election that happens every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde of Futrono was Jorge Guillermo Tatter Oñate.
Representing Futrono in Chile
Futrono is also part of larger areas for national elections. Its citizens vote for people to represent them in the Chamber of Deputies of Chile, which is part of Chile's national parliament. Futrono is grouped with several other communes, like Panguipulli and Lago Ranco, to form an "electoral district." This means they all vote for the same representatives in the Chamber of Deputies.
