G.I. Joe: Sigma 6 was a cool line of military-themed action figures and toys. Hasbro made them, bringing back characters from the 1980s G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toyline.

The Sigma 6 toys were different from the older ones. They were much bigger, about 8 inches tall, instead of the classic 3 ¾-inch size. These new figures also had more ways to move their arms and legs. Hasbro wanted to give the G.I. Joe story a fresh start. They made the characters look younger and in an anime style.

Even with these changes, some G.I. Joe fans didn't love the new line. It didn't sell as well as hoped. So, Sigma 6 was stopped after only two years. In 2007, Hasbro went back to making the smaller 3¾-inch figures.

The Story Begins

In 2005, G.I. Joe came back to TV with "Sigma 6." This was the code name for a new team of G.I. Joe heroes. They had special skills to protect the world from Cobra Commander and his evil forces. Many popular G.I. Joe characters were part of Sigma 6. These included Duke, Snake Eyes, Heavy Duty, Scarlett, and Tunnel Rat. A new hero named Long Range also joined the team.

The story is set in the 21st century. The G.I. Joe is still fighting to stop Cobra from taking over the world. After Cobra Commander escapes from prison, the Joes realize something big is happening. Cobra attacks the G.I. Joe Team's headquarters. The Joes decide to fight back with new gear. They get special "Sigma suits" designed by Hi-Tech. These suits protect them from Cobra's laser blasts. They also make the Joes stronger and faster. That's how the Joes became known as Sigma 6!

Awesome Action Figures!

In 2005, Hasbro released the Sigma 6 toys. These action figures were 8 inches tall. This was much bigger than the older 3¾-inch figures.

The first group of figures included Duke, Heavy Duty, Kamakura, Snake Eyes, Spirit Iron-Knife, and Tunnel Rat. Cobra figures included a Ninja B.A.T. and Storm Shadow.

In 2006, new G.I. Joe figures came out. These were Firefly, Hi-Tech, Long Range, and Lt. Stone. Cobra added Cobra Commander, Destro, a Sky B.A.T., and Zartan. Many of the 2005 figures were also re-released.

The most Sigma 6 figures came out in 2007. New G.I. Joe characters included Flint, Gung-Ho, Shipwreck, and Wet Suit. New Cobra figures included Iron Grenadiers and Cobra Red Ninja.

Character File Cards

The new figures also had different "file cards." These cards tell you about each character. The new cards showed:

  • A picture of the character.
  • Their code name.
  • What their job is.
  • Their current status.
  • A short personal history.
  • A list of their weapons and gear.

Smaller Mission Figures

Hasbro also made smaller 2 ½-inch action figures. These were called "Mission Sets." Each set came with figures and a "mission in a box." It was like getting a whole adventure in one package!

The R.O.C.C. Vehicle

The Rolling Operations Command Center (R.O.C.C.) was a cool vehicle. It first came out in 2005. It was packaged with the Long Range action figure.

The R.O.C.C. is a large truck with a trailer. It's smaller than other command centers. But it's much faster and easier to move around. The R.O.C.C. has special technology. It can look like a normal trailer truck or even a camper. This helps the Joes surprise Cobra! The truck part has a hidden missile launcher. It can also separate from the trailer for scouting or attacks. The cab can hold six Joe figures.

The trailer opens up to become a command center. It has an elevator and a mini-jet. There's also a command station with computers. The R.O.C.C. was a main base for the Joe team in the cartoon.

The Dragonhawk Helicopter

The Dragonhawk is a fictional attack copter. The G.I. Joe team uses it in the G.I. Joe: Sigma 6 series. This vehicle helped Scarlett, Duke, and Snake Eyes when they were fighting Cobra. It belonged to British Joe operative Lt. Stone. He was a friend of Duke's.

The Dragonhawk has two powerful engines. These let it take off and land straight up and down. It can also fly forward or backward very fast. Besides fighting, it can carry smaller vehicles. These include the V.A.M.P. and the Ninja Hovercycle. It can also carry the whole team!

The Dragonhawk has many weapons. It has three missile launchers and two cannons. It also has a Gatling gun. For defense, its engines can create an energy shield. This shield stops lasers and missiles.

Episodes 26

A 26-episode animated series came with the toyline. It was made by 4Kids Productions and animated by the Japanese studio Gonzo. The show aired on Fox, G4, and YTV. There was also a 6-issue comic series.

The G.I. Joe: Sigma 6 cartoon continued the story from two earlier G.I. Joe movies. These were G.I. Joe: Spy Troops and G.I. Joe: Valor vs. Venom. The show made some changes to the characters.

Duke was the G.I. Joe commander. He was shown as a younger man. Scarlett became the second-in-command after Duke. She was also younger in the series. Tunnel Rat was an expert in sneaking around and demolitions. Heavy Duty was the team's weapons expert. Spirit Iron-Knife was a tracker with his falcon, Billy. Long Range was the team's sniper. Hi-Tech was the electronics and communications expert. Snake Eyes, Jinx, and Kamakura were the ninja unit.

Cobra also had some changes. Cobra Commander looked different and was more serious. Destro worked closely with Cobra. Overkill was a robotic scientist. Zartan was still the master of disguise. The Dreadnoks were a biker gang. Storm Shadow was Cobra's ninja.

The show often had a theme of "man vs. machine." Cobra's army was mostly made of Battle Android Troopers (B.A.T.s). Many Cobra leaders also had robotic parts or special armored suits.
