Gaafar Muhammad an-Nimeiry was an important leader of Sudan. He served as the President of Sudan from 1969 to 1985. His name can also be spelled as Jaafar Nimeiry or Gaafar Nimeiry.

Gaafar Nimeiry: A Leader of Sudan
How He Became President
Gaafar Nimeiry became Sudan's leader after a military takeover in 1969. This is called a military coup. He took charge of the country at that time.
Working for Peace and Facing Challenges
In 1972, Nimeiry signed an important agreement. It was called the Addis Ababa Agreement. This agreement helped to end the First Sudanese Civil War. That was a long conflict in Sudan.
Later, in 1983, Nimeiry made a big change. He decided to use Sharia law in the country. Sharia law is a system of religious laws. This decision led to another major conflict. It was called the Second Sudanese Civil War.
End of His Rule
Nimeiry was removed from power in 1985. This happened after another change in government. After this, he went to live in exile in Egypt.
