How He Became President

Gaafar Nimeiry became Sudan's leader after a military takeover in 1969. This is called a military coup. He took charge of the country at that time.

Working for Peace and Facing Challenges

In 1972, Nimeiry signed an important agreement. It was called the Addis Ababa Agreement. This agreement helped to end the First Sudanese Civil War. That was a long conflict in Sudan.

Later, in 1983, Nimeiry made a big change. He decided to use Sharia law in the country. Sharia law is a system of religious laws. This decision led to another major conflict. It was called the Second Sudanese Civil War.

End of His Rule

Nimeiry was removed from power in 1985. This happened after another change in government. After this, he went to live in exile in Egypt.
