Gabino Rey Santiago (born January 8, 1928 – died April 30, 2006) was a famous Spanish painter. He was known by his artistic name, Gabino. His father, Agustín Rey Fonseca, was involved in politics. Gabino was also the father of another painter, Pablo Rey.

Gabino Rey Santiago was born on January 8, 1928, in Marín, a town in Pontevedra, Spain. When he was eight years old, in 1936, his family moved from their home region of Galicia to Barcelona. This move happened because of the Spanish Civil War, a big conflict in Spain at that time. Living in Barcelona was very important for Gabino's art. He was greatly influenced by the art style popular in Catalonia, the region where Barcelona is located.
Gabino was known as a realist painter. This means he painted things exactly as they looked in real life. He painted many different subjects. These included people, everyday objects (called still lifes), beautiful landscapes, and scenes of the sea (called seascapes). He also painted many portraits of people. His paintings showed his amazing skill and talent.
Exhibitions and Fame
Gabino's artistic journey began early. In 1943, when he was just 15, he entered a special art show for young artists in Barcelona. It was called the Salón de la Juventud at Galeries Dalmau. Gabino won the top prize! This prize allowed him to have his very own art show at the same gallery in 1945. This was his first official exhibition.
He became one of the main painters at the Sala Parés Art Gallery in Barcelona. This gallery was very important to him. He showed his artwork there for his entire life, starting with his first exhibition in 1957 until he passed away.
Gabino's art was shown in many cities around the world. He had exhibitions in major Spanish cities like Madrid and Barcelona. His paintings also traveled to international cities such as London, Paris, and New York.
Gabino Rey Santiago died on April 30, 2006, in Barcelona, Spain.
