Life and Career Highlights
Gabriele Muccino was born in Rome, Italy. He first studied Italian literature at Sapienza University of Rome. However, he soon left university to follow his dream of becoming a director. His first experience on a film set was as a volunteer assistant director. This experience made him even more passionate about filmmaking.
Early Filmmaking Journey
Muccino then took courses in screenwriting. He also joined a directing program at Rome's Experimental Cinematography Institute. While studying there, he made several short films. These short films were shown on Italian television. After that, he started directing a number of documentaries.
Breaking Through in Italy
After his early successes, Muccino got the chance to direct a part of an Italian anthology film called Intolerance (1996). His next film was But Forever in My Mind. His younger brother, Silvio Muccino, starred in this movie. Muccino's third major film, The Last Kiss, came out in 2001. This movie was a huge hit and brought him international attention. Because of its success, Muccino signed a deal to make two more movies with Miramax. His success continued with his next film, Remember Me, My Love, in 2003.
Directing in Hollywood
The Last Kiss won an award at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. This caught the eye of the American film industry. Soon, Muccino started directing Hollywood films. Will Smith personally chose Muccino to direct The Pursuit of Happyness. Muccino later said that Will Smith had to convince the studio to hire him. At the time, Muccino could barely speak English. He felt protected by Smith and could share his ideas, even if they were unusual. Muccino also directed another of Smith's films, Seven Pounds.
His next big movie was Playing for Keeps (2012). It starred famous actors like Gerard Butler, Dennis Quaid, and Uma Thurman. Muccino's film Fathers and Daughters also featured well-known stars such as Amanda Seyfried, Russell Crowe, and Aaron Paul. One of his more recent movies, Summertime, released in 2016, tells the story of two Italian teenagers. They travel to the United States for the first time during the summer before college.
