The Story of Gaines Village
Gaines Village was first settled in 1856. On July 4, 1856, the very first passenger train traveled through the area. A post office called Gaines Station was also set up that same year.
In 1859, the village area was officially mapped out. The village became an official "incorporated" village in 1875. The Grand Trunk Western Railroad built a train station, known as a depot, in 1884.
The Gaines Train Station
The Gaines Train Station welcomed its last passengers in 1957. After that, a business used the building in the 1970s. The station then sat empty for many years.
In 1992, a group of Gaines residents formed "S.O.S. – Save Our Station." They wanted to fix up the old station. This group later became a non-profit organization called Gaines Station Incorporated. After spending $100,000 on repairs in 1997, the station was given to the village.
The station then became the smallest branch of the Genesee District Library. On July 15, 2017, a special Michigan Historical Marker was placed at the station. This marker helps people remember its important history.
Changes in Village Services
In August 2016, the village's only police officer retired. By March 9, 2017, the village council officially closed the police department. Gaines Township then bought the village's police car.
