History of Galícia Esporte Clube
Galícia Esporte Clube started on January 1, 1933. It was created by people who had moved to Brazil from Galicia, a region in Spain. The first president of the club was Mr. Eduardo Castro de la Iglesia.
Early Success in Bahia
Galícia quickly became one of the strongest teams in its state. It was the first club to win the Bahia League Championship three times in a row.
In its first ten years, the club won the League in 1937, 1941, 1942, and 1943. They also finished second five times between 1935 and 1940.
Later Years and Challenges
After this great start, the club did not win another Bahia League title until 1968. This was their fifth and last state championship. They also finished second in 1967, 1980, 1982, and 1995.
In 1969, Galícia had its best regional performance. They finished second in the Northeast Zone of the North-Northeast Cup. The club played in the top Brazilian League, the Campeonato Brasileiro, only twice, in 1981 and 1983.
In 1999, the team moved down to the Bahia League’s Second Division. This meant they were no longer in the top state league.
In 2001, a famous magazine called "Placar" ranked Galícia as the 54th best football club in Brazil.
Return to the Top League
In 2013, Galícia won the Bahia League’s Second Division. This victory allowed them to return to the main Bahia League Championship after 14 years.
However, in 2017, the club finished last in the Bahia League Championship. They were moved down again to the Bahia League’s Second Division.
Where They Play
In its early days, Galícia played at the "Campo da Graça" stadium. After that stadium was taken down, they played at Fonte Nova. Sometimes, they also played at Pituaçu Stadium.
Today, Galícia has its own stadium. It is called the Parque Santiago. This stadium can hold up to 8,000 fans.
Team Symbols
Galícia has a few special nicknames. They are called "Demolidor de Campeões," which means "Champions' Demolisher." They are also known as "Azulino" ("The Blue One") and "Granadeiro" ("Grenadier").
The club's logo is white with a blue stripe going across it. On the stripe, you can see the letters "G," "E," and "C." In the middle, there is a Saint James Cross. This cross reminds everyone of the club's Spanish heritage from Galicia.
The players wear blue shirts with white shorts and socks. The club's official song was written by Francisco Icó da Silva.
