Club History
Galícia Esporte Clube started on January 1, 1933. It was founded by people who came from Galicia, a region in Spain. Mr. Eduardo Castro de la Iglesia was the club's first president.
Early Success
Galícia quickly became a very strong team. It was the first club to win the Bahia League Championship three times in a row. This is a big achievement in football. In its first ten years, the club won the League in 1937, 1941, 1942, and 1943. They also finished second five times between 1935 and 1940.
Later Years
After this amazing start, Galícia won its fifth and last Bahia League title in 1968. They also finished second in the league several times, including 1967, 1980, 1982, and 1995.
In 1969, Galícia had its best performance in a regional cup. They were the runner-up in the Northeast Zone of the North-Northeast Cup. The club played in the top Brazilian League, the Brazilian League First Division, only twice: in 1981 and 1983.
In 1999, the team was moved down to the Bahia League’s Second Division. In 2001, Galícia was ranked 54th among Brazilian football clubs by "Placar" magazine.
Recent Times
In 2013, Galícia won the Bahia League’s Second Division. This win meant they returned to the main Bahia League Championship after 14 years. However, in 2017, the club finished last in the Bahia League Championship. This caused them to be moved down again to the Bahia League’s Second Division.
Club Stadiums
When Galícia first started, they played at the old "Campo da Graça" stadium. After that stadium was taken down, they played their home games at Fonte Nova. This was Salvador's biggest stadium. Sometimes, they also played at Pituaçu Stadium. Today, Galícia has its own stadium called Parque Santiago. It can hold up to 8,000 fans.
Club Symbols
Galícia has a few cool nicknames. They are called "Demolidor de Campeões" (which means "Champions' Demolisher"). They are also known as "Azulino" ("The Blue One") and "Granadeiro" ("Grenadier").
The club's logo is white with a blue stripe going across it. On the stripe, you can see the letters "G", "E", and "C". There is also a Saint James Cross in the middle. This cross reminds everyone of the club's Spanish heritage from Galicia. The players wear blue shirts, white shorts, and blue socks. The club's special song, called the anthem, was written by Francisco Icó da Silva.
