Gangwon Province is a special region in South Korea. Its capital city is Chuncheon. This area is in the northeastern part of South Korea. It shares a border with North Korea to the north. To the east, it has a long coastline along the Sea of Japan. To the west, it borders Gyeonggi Province.

Before 1945, Korea was one country. Gangwon Province and its northern part, now called Kangwŏn, were a single province. Today, Gangwon Province is known for its beautiful natural areas. Much of the province is covered by mountains and forests. These mountains get a lot of snow in winter. This makes them perfect for many popular ski resorts.

Gangwon Province also includes two islands: Ulleungdo and Dokdo. Dokdo is a small group of islets. Both South Korea and Japan claim ownership of Dokdo. About 37 South Korean police officers guard the island and the waters around it.
