Gaor Bheinn, also known as Gulvain or Culvain, is a mountain in Scotland. It stands north of the main road west of Fort William. Many people start their climb to the top from Fort William. The mountain is also located south of Loch Arkaig.

This mountain is made of a type of rock called granite, which has different colored bands. Gaor Bheinn looks a bit like the letter Y from above. It has two main peaks connected by a ridge. The northern peak is slightly taller, standing 6 meters (about 20 feet) higher than the southern one. The sides of the mountain have steep cliffs and slopes.

What is Gaor Bheinn?

Gaor Bheinn is a special kind of mountain in Scotland. It is known by a few names, including Gulvain and Culvain. Its name comes from the Gaelic words for "dirty hill" or "noisy hill." This mountain is part of the Northwest Highlands in Highland, Scotland.

How Tall is Gaor Bheinn?

Gaor Bheinn reaches a height of 987 meters (about 3,238 feet) above sea level. This makes it a very tall mountain! This makes it the 23rd most prominent mountain in the British Isles.

What are Munros and Marilyns?

Gaor Bheinn is listed as both a Munro and a Marilyn.

  • A Munro is a Scottish mountain that is over 3,000 feet (914.4 meters) high. There are 282 Munros in Scotland, and climbing them all is a popular challenge.
  • A Marilyn is a hill or mountain of any height that has a "prominence" of at least 150 meters (492 feet). Prominence means how much a mountain rises from the lowest point connecting it to a higher peak. Gaor Bheinn's high prominence makes it a Marilyn.

Climbing Gaor Bheinn

Climbing Gaor Bheinn is a popular activity for hikers. The most common way to climb it is from the south, starting near Fort William. The path along the south ridge can sometimes be like a stream bed, especially when it's wet. For a slightly easier, though longer, climb in wet weather, hikers can start from Na Socachan. This route involves walking up a stream called Allt a Choire Reidh towards Gualann nan Osna, then climbing the north-west ridge of the south peak.
