Garden Island is a special area in South Australia. It is located near the city of Adelaide. You can find it about 15 kilometers north-west of the Adelaide city centre.
This area is part of the Port Adelaide River estuary. An estuary is where a river meets the sea.
About Garden Island
Garden Island is not just an island. It is also a "locality." A locality is a specific place or district. The boundaries of this locality were set in August 2009.
Where is Garden Island Located?
The Garden Island locality includes the entire geographical island. It also includes parts of the water around it. These water areas are Angas Inlet to the north, the North Arm to the south, and Eastern Passage to the east.
How Garden Island is Governed
Garden Island is part of a larger area called the federal division of Port Adelaide. It is also in the state electoral district of Port Adelaide. These divisions help decide who represents the area in government.
Since 2009, Garden Island has not been part of a local government area. This means it is managed by the state government, not a local council.
What's Planned for Garden Island?
Most of the land on Garden Island has a special plan for its future. This plan is called "MFP," which stands for the Multifunction Polis. It is a proposed development for the Adelaide area.
The idea behind the MFP is to create a hub for new ideas. It aims to be a place for research and new discoveries. This includes science, technology, environmental care, education, and the arts.
Fun Things to Do at Garden Island
Garden Island has some great facilities for people to enjoy. The Garden Island Yacht Club and the Angus Inlet Boat Club both have private areas here.
For everyone, there are public facilities too. You can find a boat ramp to launch your boats. There is also a fishing jetty where you can cast a line. Plus, there's car parking and a public toilet block for visitors. The boat ramp is used by people with both powered and unpowered boats.
