Gardiner is a small community in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. It is located across the Umpqua River from Reedsport. You can find Gardiner right on U.S. Route 101. In 2010, about 248 people lived there.
The town of Gardiner is named after a merchant from Boston. His ship, the Bostonian, was shipwrecked near the Umpqua River on October 1, 1850. Most of his goods were saved and moved to the spot where Gardiner now stands. In 1851, this area became important for customs. A post office called "Gardiners City" opened that same year. Over time, the name changed to "Gardiner City" and then to its current name, Gardiner.
The Gardiner Historic District covers almost all of Gardiner. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Many steamboats were built here. These boats were used for trading goods along the Umpqua River.
A factory that made plywood opened in Gardiner in 1954. This factory joined an older lumber mill, which had been in the town for many years. Gardiner was also home to the very first International Paper mill on the West Coast. This paper mill operated from 1963 until 1999. It was one of the biggest employers on the southern Oregon Coast. The mill buildings were taken down in 2006.
A railroad, called the Longview, Portland & Northern (LP&N), served the International Paper mill. It ran from East Gardiner Junction to the old factory site. The railroad stopped running when the mill closed.
