Story of Garfield's Fun Fest
Garfield's Comedy Routine
Garfield is reading a book about Freddy Frog to Odie. Suddenly, Jon calls them for breakfast. Jon serves their food while doing a funny disco dance. Garfield and Odie tease him about it. Jon reminds Garfield that Arlene wants to dance with him at the Fun Fest.
Garfield has won the Fun Fest 29 times. He is not worried about losing. He thinks his old comedy routine is perfect. He does not want to change it for the 30th Annual Fun Fest.
Arlene's Dance Idea
After breakfast, they pick up Nermal and Arlene. Nermal annoys everyone with his air guitar. Arlene is tired of doing the same act with Garfield. She wants to try dancing this year. Garfield says, "Don't fix what isn't broken." He means their act is fine as it is.
At the studio, Garfield and Arlene practice their lines. Arlene again suggests dancing. Garfield asks what dance she wants to do. She says Tango and gives him a costume. Garfield refuses to wear it. He does not want to look silly or ruin his winning streak. He tells Arlene to find a different partner if she wants to dance.
Ramone Arrives
A new cat named Ramone shows up. He has a cheesy accent. Ramone becomes Arlene's new dance partner. Garfield feels left out. He tries a new solo act, but it fails. Ramone makes fun of him, just like Nermal did earlier.
During Ramone and Arlene's tango, Garfield feels sad. He thinks he has lost his humor. After the show, Garfield sees Ramone flirting with Arlene. She seems to like it. This makes Garfield feel even worse.
Searching for Funny Water
The next day, Garfield is still upset. Odie, dressed as a mime, tries to wake him up. Odie finds a letter in the Freddy the Frog book. On the way to work, Garfield sees Arlene leave with Ramone. This makes Garfield worry about losing her.
At the studio cafeteria, Odie tries to give Garfield the letter. Garfield is in a bad mood and ignores him. Odie finally shoves the letter into Garfield's hand. It is a map to Freddy Frog's pond. Garfield thinks the pond water will make him funny. He plans to drink it to win the show.
At first, Garfield thinks this idea is silly. But then he sees Arlene in Ramone's romantic act. Garfield quickly changes his mind. He runs out with Odie following. Arlene sees them leave. She realizes Garfield misunderstood things. Ramone is happy about this. Arlene feels sad that Garfield is gone.
Journey to the Pond
Garfield and Odie follow the map. They find a pond and swim in it. A big frog tells them it is a dirty sewage pond. Garfield and Odie are disgusted. The frog introduces himself as Freddy Frog. Garfield asks for a sip of the funny water.
Freddy agrees but says they must learn about humor first. He gives them challenges. Garfield learns that humor is about the audience, not just the jokes. He struggles to understand. Freddy dunks him in the water. He tells Garfield to admit he is fat as a joke. After a few tries, Garfield learns about making fun of himself. They continue their journey to the real Funny Water. They now have to climb a mountain.
Fun Fest Begins
Meanwhile, Charles worries because Garfield is missing. Ramone steps in to perform. The show starts, and Arlene is sad Garfield is not there. She worries about what he thinks. Ramone quickly wins over the audience with his jokes.
Back with Garfield and Odie, they climb a long ladder. They finally reach the top. Freddy is already there, thanks to an elevator. He welcomes them to the pond with the Funny Water. Garfield drinks some and feels funny. He dances around playfully. He remembers the Fun Fest.
Garfield scoops some water into a bottle Freddy gave him. He thanks Freddy. Freddy stops them and gives them a giant hang glider. Garfield and Odie don't know how to fly it. They jump off the plateau anyway. They soar over the forest, thanking the animals who helped them.
The Big Showdown
Garfield and Odie crash through the studio window. They are just in time for Garfield's act. They go through the vents to Eli's office. Eli is happy to see them. Garfield gets ready to drink the Funny Water. But the bottle broke in the crash! All the water is gone.
Garfield feels like he has lost his humor forever. He gives up and leaves. Ramone is happy and starts his tango with Arlene. Garfield watches from behind the curtain. He is amazed by Arlene's dancing. He feels sad about losing her. Arlene sees him leaving. She tries to go to him, but Ramone pulls her back.
Odie comforts Garfield in the alley. Garfield tells Odie he is a great friend. He is upset about losing Arlene. Then, Freddy shows up. He tells Garfield that the water does not make him funny. He says Garfield is funny because of his adventure. Freddy tells him to follow his heart. He says this is his only chance to prove himself. Garfield realizes Freddy is right. He gets his hope back. He holds up a wilted rose for Arlene.
Ramone and Arlene continue dancing. Arlene is dizzy from being spun around. As she spins, Garfield catches her. He is wearing the tango clothes Arlene gave him! Arlene and the audience are happy to see him. Ramone is not. The audience cheers as Garfield and Arlene start dancing.
Ramone grabs Arlene. The two cats fight over her. Garfield is tossed onto a high rack. Eli lowers him down. Garfield snatches Arlene before Ramone can kiss her. In the fight, Garfield rips off parts of Ramone's clothes. This shows that Ramone is a robot! Garfield uses Ramone's arm to fight him. They fall onto the stage. A giant "Fun Fest" sign falls too.
Garfield uses the sign to ambush Ramone. He rips off Ramone's legs. But Ramone still moves! He tries to force Arlene to dance. Garfield grabs Ramone's face and rips it off. It was Nermal all along! The crowd cheers for Garfield. They boo Nermal, who leaves the stage in shame. He is disqualified.
Garfield and Arlene do an encore. Garfield says sorry for not trying to dance with her earlier. He realizes dancing with her was more important than winning. They win the contest! Garfield gives Arlene the rose. They are crowned the winners and kiss. Backstage, Nermal starts planning for next year's Fun Fest. Odie cannot believe it.
Freddy flies over the studio on his glider as the movie ends.
