Gargoyles the Movie: The Heroes Awaken is an animated film from Walt Disney Television Animation. This movie is actually the first five episodes of the TV series Gargoyles put together. It's called "Awakening" and was released as one long film.

Because it combines five episodes, some scenes from the original TV show were cut. Also, some scenes were moved around, and a few lines of talking were changed. The TV episodes first aired in 1994. The movie came out on laserdisc and VHS in February 1995. It even had a fun board game you could play with the VHS or laserdisc! Later, the original pilot episodes were released on DVD as part of Gargoyles: Season 1.

The Story Begins

Ancient Scotland: Castle Wyvern

The story starts in Scotland in the year 994 A.D. A castle called Wyvern is being attacked by Vikings, led by a tough warrior named Hakon. The human soldiers at the castle struggle to fight them off. But when the sun goes down, something amazing happens! Stone statues of gargoyles on the castle walls come to life.

These living gargoyles, led by their strong leader Goliath, defend the castle. They are powerful and scare the Vikings away. The human captain of the guard sees them as heroes. However, Princess Katherine and the wizard Magus, along with most other humans, still see the gargoyles as scary monsters. They treat them badly.

Goliath's partner and the Captain believe the gargoyles deserve more respect. After all, the castle was built on land that once belonged to the gargoyles. But Goliath insists that they must protect the castle and its people, even if they are misunderstood. The Captain asks Goliath to take his clan away from the castle for safety. But Goliath is determined to stay and protect it.

Meanwhile, three young gargoyles and their dog-like gargoyle friend are bothered by a scared human mother. Even though they try to be friendly, they have to scare the humans away to protect themselves. Goliath is upset and tells them to stay in their cave where the clan's eggs are kept. Goliath and his older mentor then chase after the Vikings. They realize it was a trick to get them away from the castle. The sun rises, turning them back into stone before they can return.

A Terrible Betrayal

The castle is attacked again by Hakon and the Vikings. The human captain of the guard is angry about how his people treat the gargoyles. He betrays the castle and Princess Katherine to the Vikings. The castle is lost during the day while the gargoyles are helpless stone statues. Hakon destroys most of the gargoyles while they are in stone sleep.

That night, Goliath and his mentor return to find the castle in ruins. Most of their gargoyle family is destroyed. Only the three young gargoyles and their hound survived because Goliath sent them to the caverns. Filled with anger, the surviving gargoyles chase after the Vikings.

Far from the castle, the Vikings have captured Princess Katherine, Magus, and other townspeople. The Captain, having betrayed his people, stays with the Vikings. Hakon teases Magus by burning pages from his magic spell book, the Grimorum Arcanorum. When the gargoyles arrive to rescue the people, Hakon and the Captain run away with Princess Katherine.

Goliath chases them, while the other gargoyles defeat the Vikings. The townspeople are saved. But Magus is furious, thinking the gargoyles caused Katherine's death. He casts a powerful curse on the gargoyles.

Goliath catches up to Hakon, the Captain, and Katherine. He confronts the Captain for his betrayal. Hakon blames the Captain for the gargoyles' destruction. The Captain attacks Hakon, and they both fall off a cliff. Goliath saves Katherine. But when he returns, he finds his clan turned to stone, unable to wake up even at night. Magus realizes his mistake. The pages needed to break the spell were burned. The gargoyles will stay cursed until "the castle rises above the clouds." Heartbroken, Goliath leaves his clan's eggs with Katherine and Magus. He asks Magus to cast the spell on him too, so he can share his clan's fate.

Waking Up in New York

A thousand years later, in 1994, a rich businessman named David Xanatos finds the old Castle Wyvern. He has it rebuilt on top of his skyscraper in New York City. The sleeping gargoyles are brought with it. Goliath finally wakes up and is happy to see his clan. But they are shocked to be in a completely new world.

Xanatos explains that he found and read the Grimorum Arcanorum. He followed Magus's instructions to wake them up. He acts like a friend. Soon after they wake, the castle is attacked by armed people from a helicopter. The gargoyles defend the castle until the attackers leave.

The fight causes damage below, so police detective Elisa Maza comes to investigate. She finds Goliath and the gargoyles. They slowly become friends. The gargoyles decide to name themselves after places in New York. The elder mentor names himself Hudson. The young trio become Brooklyn, Lexington, and Broadway. Their hound is named Bronx.

New Friends and Old Enemies

Xanatos reunites Goliath with his partner, who survived the massacre. The two are happy to be together again. Xanatos convinces the gargoyles to help him get back some data discs he says were stolen during the attack.

After their mission, Elisa talks to Goliath privately about the theft. They are attacked by the same people from before. They survive the night, and Elisa protects Goliath while he is stone during the day. Elisa investigates and tells Goliath that Xanatos hired the attackers. She reveals that Xanatos has been using Goliath.

Xanatos no longer needs the gargoyles. He sends his robotic steel gargoyles to destroy them. But the real gargoyles fight back and destroy the robots. Goliath's partner reveals her name is Demona. She is working with Xanatos. She also reveals that a thousand years ago, she worked with the Captain to betray Princess Katherine. She wanted the gargoyles to have the castle to themselves. Now, she hates all humans and sees them as enemies.

Goliath and the clan refuse to fight humans. Demona then decides Goliath is her enemy and tries to kill him. Elisa arrives and tackles Demona. Demona accidentally fires her laser weapon, damaging the castle. Demona and Elisa fall. Goliath saves Elisa, but Demona disappears.

Goliath is angry and tries to kill Xanatos. But Elisa stops him. She says if he does, he would be no better than Demona. Xanatos is arrested. The few surviving gargoyles accept their new lives in New York. Elisa becomes their trusted friend.
