Gaspé Bay

Gaspé Bay is a beautiful bay in Quebec, Canada. It is found on the northeast coast of the Gaspé Peninsula. This bay opens into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The town of Gaspé, Quebec is located on its southern side. Much of the northern shore is part of Forillon National Park. Two important rivers flow into the bay: the Dartmouth River and the York River. The York River even flows through the center of Gaspé town.

History of Gaspé Bay

Gaspé Bay has a rich history. It is a very important place for Canada.

Jacques Cartier's Arrival

On July 24, 1534, the French explorer Jacques Cartier arrived here. He claimed the land for King François I of France. This event marked the start of France's expansion overseas. It was the beginning of New France, which is now part of Canada.

British Raids

Years later, in 1758, British General James Wolfe led a raid on Gaspé Bay. This happened during the Gulf of St. Lawrence Campaign. It was just one year before the famous Siege of Quebec.

Ancient Life in Gaspé Bay

Scientists have found very old clues about life here. These clues are called fossils.

Fossils Found

Along the shores of Gaspé Bay, paleobotanists have discovered fossils. These include plant fossils and traces of ancient insects. These finds are from the Devonian period. This period was a very long time ago. It helps us learn about Earth's past.
