Gautam Shantilal Adani (born 24 June 1962) is a very successful Indian businessman. He is the founder and chairman of the Adani Group. This is a huge company that works in many different areas. It is especially known for building and running ports in India. Adani is one of the richest people in Asia and the world. In 2022, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people.
When he was a teenager, Adani moved to Mumbai in 1978. He started working there as a diamond sorter. In 1981, he began managing his older brother's plastic factory in Ahmedabad. This job helped him learn about global trading. He started importing materials like polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This led him to create the Adani Group in 1988.
Early life and education
Gautam Adani was born on 24 June 1962. His family lived in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. He has seven brothers and sisters. His parents, Shantilal and Shantaben Adani, were from a town called Tharad. His father worked as a small textile merchant.
Adani went to school at Sheth Chimanlal Nagindas Vidyalaya in Ahmedabad. He later started studying for a business degree at Gujarat University. But he left college after his second year. Adani was very interested in starting his own business. He did not want to join his father's textile business.
Career
In 1978, Adani moved to Mumbai to work with diamonds. In 1981, his older brother asked him to manage a plastics factory. This factory was in Ahmedabad. This experience helped Adani learn about international trade. He began importing raw materials for plastics.
In 1985, he started importing basic polymers. These were for small businesses. In 1988, Adani created Adani Exports. This company is now called Adani Enterprises. It is the main company of the Adani Group. At first, the company traded farm products and power. In 1991, new government rules helped his company grow. He then started trading metals, textiles, and other farm products.
In 2006, Adani started a business that makes electricity. Between 2009 and 2012, he bought a port in Australia. He also bought a coal mine in Australia.
In February 2022, he became the richest person in Asia. He passed Mukesh Ambani. In August 2022, Fortune magazine said he was the 3rd richest person in the world.
Adani Group
In 1994, the government of Gujarat decided to let private companies manage the Mundra Port. In 1995, Adani won the contract to do this.
In 1995, he built the first part of the port, called a jetty. The port was first run by Mundra Port & Special Economic Zone. Later, it was moved to Adani Ports & SEZ (APSEZ). Today, this company is the biggest private port operator. Mundra Port is India's largest private port. It can handle about 210 million tons of goods each year.
In 1996, Adani started Adani Power. This is the power part of the Adani Group. Adani Power owns thermal power plants. These plants make electricity using heat. They have a total capacity of 4620 megawatts. This makes Adani Power the largest private maker of thermal power in India.
In May 2020, Adani won a very large solar power project. It was worth US$6 billion. This project was from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The project will build an 8000-megawatt solar power plant. This will be done by Adani Green. Adani Solar will also build more factories. These factories will make solar cells and modules.
In September 2020, Adani bought a large share (74%) in Mumbai International Airport. This is India's second busiest airport.
In May 2022, the Adani family bought two cement companies. These were Ambuja Cements and ACC. They bought them from a Swiss company for $10.5 billion.
In August 2022, a part of the Adani Group, AMNL, said it planned to buy a company called RRPR Holding. This company owned 29.18% of a news channel called NDTV. Adani also offered to buy more shares.
Personal life
Gautam Adani married Priti Vora in 1986. She is a dentist. They have two sons named Karan and Jeet. Priti Adani leads the Adani Foundation. This is the part of the Adani Group that does charity work. Karan is the CEO of Adani Ports & SEZ. Jeet works with the Adani Airports business. He also leads Adani Digital Labs.
On 26 November 2008, Adani was having dinner at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai. This was when the hotel was attacked by terrorists. Adani hid in the hotel kitchen. He then hid in a toilet. He came out safely the next day.
