About Gawler Ranges

How the Locality Was Created

The boundaries for Gawler Ranges were officially set on April 26, 2013. The name "Gawler Ranges" was already well-known locally. The main reason for creating these boundaries was to make sure the entire Gawler Ranges National Park was within the locality of the same name.

Because of this, an older locality called Paney no longer exists. Its land was split between Gawler Ranges and another nearby locality called Pygery. The name "Gawler Ranges" comes from both the mountain range and the national park.

What the Land is Used For

The land in Gawler Ranges is used for different things. A big part of it is used for conservation. This means protecting nature and wildlife. This conservation use is mainly found on the eastern side of the locality, where the national park is.
