James Gaye Stewart (born June 28, 1923 – died November 18, 2010) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played for nine seasons as a forward in the National Hockey League (NHL).
Stewart was born in Fort William, Ontario. He became known for his skill as a right winger.

Early Career and First Stanley Cup
Gaye Stewart joined the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1942. He was called up from a minor league team. In his very first season, he helped the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup championship. This was a huge start to his career!
Winning the Calder Trophy
The next season, in 1943, Stewart won the Calder Memorial Trophy. This award is given to the best new player, or rookie, in the NHL. He won it over another famous player, Maurice Richard. Gaye Stewart was the first player in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup before winning the Calder Trophy. Other players like Danny Grant, Tony Esposito, and Ken Dryden have also done this since then.
Return to Hockey After War
Gaye Stewart served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. After two years, he returned to the NHL in 1945. This was his best season ever. He led the entire league with 37 goals. This was the last time a Maple Leafs player led the league in scoring.
Second Stanley Cup Win
Stewart won his second Stanley Cup in 1947. He won it again with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was a key part of their success.
Playing for Other Teams
In the 1947-48 season, the Maple Leafs traded Stewart to the Chicago Blackhawks. This trade brought another great player, Max Bentley, to Toronto. Stewart continued to play well for the Blackhawks. He scored 20 goals or more in three different seasons with them.
After his time in Chicago, he played for other NHL teams. He had short periods with the Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, and Montreal Canadiens. In total, Gaye Stewart played for five of the six original NHL teams. The only one he didn't play for was the Boston Bruins.

Gaye Stewart played 502 games in his NHL career. He scored 185 goals and made 159 assists. This gave him a total of 344 points. He was known for his scoring ability and his strong play.
Later Life
Gaye Stewart passed away on November 18, 2010. He was 87 years old. He died in a hospital in Burlington, Ontario.
