Exploring Gaythorne's Location

Gaythorne is found about seven kilometres north-west of the centre of Brisbane. A lovely creek called Kedron Brook forms its northern border. The suburb sits on the slopes of Enoggera Hill.

Gaythorne shares some streets and even a postcode with its neighbour, Mitchelton. It's a green, leafy area with many traditional "Queenslander" style homes. These houses are famous for their unique design.

The suburb is right next to the Enoggera Barracks, which is a military base. Because of this, many streets in Gaythorne are named after important places from World War I.

Getting around Gaythorne is easy! You can use the Gaythorne railway station, which is part of the Ferny Grove - City train line.

The name "Gaythorne" comes from a property in the area that belonged to a person named Howard Bliss.

Early Churches in Gaythorne

In 1915, a new Presbyterian church was built on the corner of Pickering Street and Station Avenue. This area was known as Enoggera back then. Later, in 1926, the church got bigger with an extension for a Sunday school.

In 1977, many churches joined together to form the Uniting Church of Australia. This Presbyterian church then became the Gaythorne Uniting Church. However, over time, fewer people attended, and the church eventually closed. Since 2012, the building has been used as a centre for early education.

Another church, All Souls' Anglican church, was opened in 1961. It was located on Tel El Kebir Street. This church also closed around 1986. Today, that building is used as a child care centre.

Land Sales and Development

In May 1919, land lots from the Rangeview Estate in Enoggera were sold. This area was close to the Rifle Range Railway Station, which is now known as Gaythorne Station. In 1921, any land that didn't sell was offered again as the "Gaythorne & Rangeview Estates."

Later, in April 1924, 170 more residential lots were sold in the Bellevue Park Estate. This area was described as being on Samford Road and Bellevue Avenue.
