The Geddes Historic District is a special area that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This means it's recognized as important for its history. The district covers about 100 acres (40 hectares).
This historic district includes most of the old town of Geddes. The town mostly stopped growing around 1920. This happened because the railroad didn't come through Geddes. Also, Geddes tried to become the main town (county seat) for Charles Mix County several times, but it didn't win. The county seat eventually went to Lake Andes, South Dakota, which is about 15 miles (24 km) away.
Oldest Building: Papineau Trading Post
The oldest building in the historic district is the Papineau Trading Post. It was built in 1857 using squared logs from plains cottonwood trees. This building is likely the oldest one in the entire state of South Dakota! It was moved to Geddes from a few miles away and is now on the southern edge of the historic district.
Other Historic Buildings
Most of the other important buildings in the district were built between 1900 and 1920. These include:
- The Livery Stable, built in 1910. A livery stable was a place where people could keep or rent horses.
- The Padley Hotel, also known as the Hotel Castle. This was a three-story brick building. In 1916, sun porches were added to it when it was used as a community hospital.
- St. Anna's Catholic Church, finished in 1903. This is a two-story wooden church with beautiful medieval-style stained glass windows and carved wood on the outside. It is still used today.
- St. Anna's School, completed in 1917. This was a three-story brick building with a basement. It was a boarding school until 1935, meaning students could live there. It is no longer used as a school.
- The blacksmith shop, built in 1910. This wooden building was old when the district was listed, but it was special because it still had tools and machines from that time period.
- The "Old Dormitory," built in 1905. This building provided a place for children from farm families to stay during the week while they attended the original high school.
Many private homes are also part of the district. They look much the same as they did when they were first built.
