About the General Winfield Scott House

The General Winfield Scott House is in Greenwich Village. It sits on the south side of West 12th Street. This is between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. It is one of two very similar brownstone houses. Both houses are four stories tall.

The bottom floor looks like a basement. It has a stone exterior with a fancy top edge called a cornice. There is also a metal railing. The doors and windows on this floor have rounded arches. These arches have a special stone at the top called a keystone. The entrances also have decorative columns and brackets. The windows on the upper floors have slightly rounded tops. They also have small decorative ledges above them.

General Winfield Scott's Life and Legacy

These two houses were built in 1851–52. They were built by Charles Partridge, a local businessman. He lived right next door to them. Number 24 was sold to Winfield Scott in 1853. It was his home until 1855.

General Scott was a very important military leader. He led the U.S. Army in the Mexican–American War from 1846 to 1848. He was also a candidate for president in 1852. Even before these events, he had a long and successful military career.

He was a skilled trainer and leader in the War of 1812. He wrote a guide on how infantry soldiers should fight. This was the first book of its kind for the United States Army. Scott was also good at solving problems without fighting. He helped calm down several tense situations. These included the Nullification Crisis in 1832–33. He also helped with the Aroostook War in 1838–39.
