Geokaun Mountain, also known as an Geocán in Irish, is the tallest mountain on Valentia Island in County Kerry, Ireland. It's a special place with amazing views and interesting history.

Exploring Geokaun Mountain

Amazing Cliffs and Views

On the northern side of Geokaun Mountain, you'll find the impressive Fogher Cliffs. These cliffs drop straight down to meet the sea from about 600 feet (183 meters) high!

From the very top of Geokaun, you can see incredible sights all around. You might spot the famous Skellig Islands, the beautiful Dingle Peninsula, and the Blasket Islands. You can also see nearby Beginish Island, the towns of Cahersiveen and Portmagee, and the tall peaks of MacGillycuddy's Reeks. This mountain range includes three of Ireland's highest mountains: Carrauntoohil, Beenkeragh, and Caher.

The top of Geokaun Mountain is on private land. To reach the summit, you need to pay a small fee to use the main path. This path makes it easy to explore the mountain safely.

As you walk up the mountain, you'll find four special viewing areas. At these spots, there are 36 information plaques. These plaques share cool facts about the area's history, nature, and local life. You can learn about many different topics, such as:

  • The Skellig Islands, which are famous for their ancient monastery and Star Wars filming.
  • The first transatlantic telegraph cable, which connected Europe and America right from Valentia Island.
  • Bray Tower, an old lookout tower.
  • St Brendan's Well, a historic holy well.
  • The Knight of Kerry, a local historical title.
  • The many types of birds that live in the area.
  • How people used to fish using large nets, called seine fishing.
  • The Valentia Island lighthouse, which guides ships.
  • The amazing tetrapod trackway, which shows footprints of ancient creatures.
