Georg Christoph Wagenseil (born January 29, 1715 – died March 1, 1777) was an important Austrian composer. He lived and worked mostly in Vienna. Wagenseil helped music change from the older Baroque style to the newer, more elegant Classical style.

Life and Career

Georg Christoph Wagenseil was born in Vienna. He became a favorite student of Johann Joseph Fux. Fux was a famous music director at the Vienna court.

Wagenseil started composing for the court in 1739. He continued this work until he died. He also played the harpsichord and organ for the court.

He taught many students. One of his students was Johann Baptist Schenk. Schenk later taught Ludwig van Beethoven, a very famous composer. Wagenseil also taught Marie Antoinette, who became the Queen of France.

Wagenseil did not travel much. He spent most of his life in Vienna. He was a well-known musician during his time. Both Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart knew his music. They were two of the most famous composers of the Classical period.

His Music

Wagenseil's early music was in the Baroque style. This style often featured complex melodies and rich harmonies. Later, his music changed to the Classical style. This new style was lighter and more balanced.

He wrote many different types of music. These included operas, pieces for choirs, symphonies, and concertos. He also composed chamber music and pieces for keyboard instruments.

Operas

Wagenseil wrote several operas. These were stage works that combined music, singing, and drama. Some of his operas include:

  • La generosità trionfante (1745)
  • Ariodante (1745)
  • La clemenza di Tito (1745)
  • Demetrio (1746)
  • Alexander der Grosse in Indien (1748)

Concertos

Concertos are pieces for a solo instrument and an orchestra. Wagenseil wrote many concertos. He wrote them for instruments like the cello, flute, and harpsichord. Some examples are:

  • Concerto for alto trombone in E-flat major
  • Concerto for cello & orchestra in A major, WV 348
  • Concerto for flute, strings & continuo in D major, WWV 342
  • Concerto for harpsichord/organ & strings No. 1 in C major

Symphonies
