A Look at George's Past
George started as a large farming area that needed a lot of water, part of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project. In the early 1950s, people realized they needed a town to support all the local farms and businesses. The government set aside about 339 acres (1.37 square kilometers) for this new town.
How George Got Its Name
A local pharmacist named Charlie Brown was the only one to bid on the land. He invested his own money and got help from a University of Washington instructor to plan the town, including streets and utilities. When it was time to officially name the town, Brown decided to honor President George Washington.
The people of George have named their streets after different kinds of cherries grown nearby, like Bing and Royal Anne. The town officially became a city on November 4, 1957. There was a big celebration with the Governor, Albert Rosellini, and a huge 1,000-pound (450 kg) cherry pie!
