George Carter (born January 10, 1944 – died November 18, 2020) was an American professional basketball player. He was known for being a versatile player, often playing as a swingman. This means he could play both Small forward and Shooting guard positions.

Early Life and High School Years

George Carter was born in Buffalo, New York. He grew up playing sports. He went to Silver Creek High School in New York. He graduated from high school in 1963.

During his time in high school, George was a great athlete. He was chosen as an all-Western New York player in basketball twice. Besides basketball, he also played high school American football and ran track.

College Basketball Career

After high school, Carter continued his basketball journey. He played college basketball at St. Bonaventure University. He played for the St. Bonaventure Bonnies from 1964 to 1967. His jersey number, 25, was later retired by the university. This is a big honor for a college player.

Professional Sports Career

George Carter had a very unique start to his professional career. In 1967, he was drafted by four different professional sports leagues! This is very rare.

Playing in the NBA and ABA

George Carter played only one game for the Detroit Pistons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Soon after, he joined the Washington Caps in the American Basketball Association (ABA). The ABA was a rival basketball league at the time.

He played for seven seasons in the ABA. During this time, he played for several teams. These included the Washington Caps, Virginia Squires, Carolina Cougars, Pittsburgh Condors, New York Nets, Memphis Sounds, and Utah Stars.

In 1971, George Carter was chosen to play in the 1971 ABA All-Star Game. This means he was one of the best players in the league that year. Throughout his career in both the ABA and NBA, he scored a total of 8,863 points.

Later Career

After playing in the ABA, George Carter also played basketball overseas. He played for ASVEL Villeurbanne in France during the 1976–1977 season.

Death

George Carter passed away on November 18, 2020. He died in Las Vegas, Nevada.
