George Howard, 6th Earl of Carlisle (born 17 September 1773, died 7 October 1848) was an important British politician. He was known as Viscount Morpeth until 1825. He held several key roles in the government, including Lord Privy Seal. He was also a member of the Whig government led by Lord Grey.
Early Life and Education
George Howard was born in London, England. His father was Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle. His mother was Lady Margaret Caroline Leveson-Gower. He had several brothers and sisters.
His grandparents were Henry Howard, 4th Earl of Carlisle and Isabella Byron. His mother's father was Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford.
George went to two famous schools. He studied at Eton College and then at Christ Church, Oxford University.
Political Career
George Howard began his political journey in 1795. He was elected to Parliament for Morpeth. He was a member of the Whig political group. He held this seat until 1806. After that, he represented Cumberland in Parliament until 1820.
In 1806, he became a member of the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the King. He also joined a special board for Indian affairs. He left this role in 1807.
In 1825, his father passed away. George then became the 6th Earl of Carlisle. This meant he joined the House of Lords, which is the upper house of the British Parliament.
He served in the government as First Commissioner of Woods and Forests from May to July 1827. He then became Lord Privy Seal from July 1827 to January 1828. The Lord Privy Seal is a senior government minister.
Later, he disagreed with the Tories about changing election rules. He then joined the Whig governments. He was a Minister without Portfolio from 1830 to 1834. This meant he was a minister but didn't have a specific department to run. He served as Lord Privy Seal again from July to November 1834.
Besides his work in Parliament, he was also the Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire. This role meant he was the King's representative in that area from 1824 to 1840. In 1837, he received a very special honor. He was made a Knight of the Garter.
