Early Life and First Steps
George Swan Nottage was born in London in 1823. He spent his younger years living in Essex, a county near London. When he was a young man, he worked for his uncle, Robert Kennard. His uncle owned a company called the Blaenavon Coal and Iron Company. This was a big business dealing with coal and iron.
Starting a Photography Business
In 1854, George Nottage opened a shop on Oxford Street in London. In his shop window, he showed off stereoviews. These were special photos that looked 3D when viewed through a device called a stereoscope. People loved these stereoviews, and they sold very quickly.
Nottage saw a great chance to start a new business. By the end of 1854, he and his cousin, Howard John Kennard, started a company. They first called it the London Stereoscope Company. Later, it became known as the London Stereoscopic Company. Finally, it was named the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company. This company became very famous for its photographs and stereoviews.
Business and Political Roles
Besides his photography business, Nottage had many other business interests. He was involved in the iron trade, buying and selling land (real estate), carpentry, and optics (making lenses and glasses). He also worked in banking and insurance.
Nottage was a member of several important groups called Worshipful Companies. These were like old trade guilds. He belonged to the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, where he was even the Master (leader) in 1884–1885. He was also part of the Worshipful Company of Loriners and the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.
He served as an Alderman for the City of London. An Alderman is a senior member of the city council. From 1877 to 1878, he was also a Sheriff of the City of London. A Sheriff is an important official who helps with law and order.
On 9 November 1884, George Nottage became the Lord Mayor of London. He took over this role from Sir Robert Fowler. The Lord Mayor is the head of the City of London Corporation, a very old and important local government.
Death and Burial
George Nottage sadly died on 11 April 1885. He was still serving as the Lord Mayor when he passed away. He had been ill with a chest infection, either bronchitis or pleurisy.
Because he died while in office as Lord Mayor, he was allowed to be buried in St Paul's Cathedral. After a funeral service, his coffin was placed in the crypt, which is an underground burial chamber in the cathedral.
Family Life
George Nottage was married to Martha Christiana Nottage. They had two children together: a daughter named Amy Christiana Nottage and a son named Charles George Nottage.
About two months after George Nottage's death, his wife Martha was given a special title by Queen Victoria. She was called the "Widow of a Knight Bachelor".
