George Zinn (1842 – April 25, 1899) was an important officer in the Union Army. He fought during the American Civil War. Later, he was given the honorary rank of brigadier general.

Early Life
George Zinn was born in 1842 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Before the war, he worked as a hardware merchant.
Military Service in the Civil War
George Zinn joined the Union Army on October 1, 1861. He started as a second lieutenant in the 84th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. He quickly rose through the ranks.
Zinn's Promotions
- On October 2, 1862, he became a captain.
- On August 1, 1864, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.
- On January 13, 1865, his regiment joined with the 57th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment.
- On March 19, 1865, he became a colonel of the 57th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment.
He left the volunteer army on June 29, 1865.
Honorary General Rank
On January 13, 1866, President Andrew Johnson nominated Zinn for an honorary rank. He was to become a brevet brigadier general of volunteers. This rank was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 12, 1866.
Family Life
George Zinn had a son, also named George Zinn, who became a captain. This son showed the Browning machine gun to American soldiers during World War I. George Zinn's grandson, also named George Zinn, was a pilot who died in a plane crash.
Death
George Zinn passed away in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on April 25, 1899. He was buried in Harrisburg Cemetery in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
