Gerald Hayes grew up in Paterson, New Jersey. He played high school football at Passaic County Technical Institute. During his time there, he played alongside future NFL players Marcel Shipp and Mike Adams.

He was recognized three times as an All-Big East Conference player. By the end of his college career, he had made 402 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and caught two interceptions.
