Early Life and Family
Geraldine Leigh Chaplin was born on July 31, 1944, in Santa Monica, California. She was the fourth child of the famous actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin. She was also the first child of Charlie Chaplin and his fourth wife, Oona O'Neill. They got married in 1943.
When Geraldine was born, her father Charlie Chaplin was 55 years old, and her mother Oona was 19. Geraldine was the first of their eight children. Her grandparents on her father's side were Charles Chaplin Sr. and Hannah Chaplin. On her mother's side, her grandparents were the Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer Eugene O'Neill and the English writer Agnes Boulton.
When Geraldine was eight, her family went on vacation to Britain and Europe. While they were away, the U.S. government decided that her father, Charlie Chaplin, could not return to the United States. So, her family moved to Switzerland. Geraldine went to boarding school there and learned to speak French and Spanish very well. During this time, she also appeared in her father's film Limelight (1952).
Career Beginnings
Dance and Modeling
When she was 17, Geraldine decided not to go to college. Instead, she wanted to become a dancer. She studied ballet in England for two years, including some time at the Royal Ballet School in 1961. After that, she danced professionally in Paris for a year. Even though she was a good dancer, she felt she hadn't started training early enough to be the best. So, she decided to stop ballet.
After dancing, Chaplin worked as a fashion model in Paris. It was there that the famous film director David Lean noticed her.
First Acting Roles (1965–1969)
After her dream of being a ballet dancer ended, Geraldine followed her father into acting. She quickly became well-known for her role as Tonya in David Lean's movie Doctor Zhivago (1965). Lean chose her to play the main character's wife. For this role, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for "Most Promising Female Newcomer." In an interview, she said that her famous last name helped open doors for her.

In 1967, she made her debut on Broadway in the play The Little Foxes by Lillian Hellman. A reviewer from The New York Times, Clive Barnes, praised her performance. He said she acted with "spirit and force" and showed "surprising power."
