About His Life
Gerardo Abad Conde studied law and became a lawyer. He worked in A Coruña, a city in Spain. He also taught classes about business and sea laws at the School of Commerce there. He was even the director of the Nautical School, which teaches people about sailing and ships.
Early Political Steps
When he first started in politics, he joined a group called the Partido Republicano Autónomo in A Coruña. He became a secretary for this group in 1908. Later, in the 1920s, his party joined a bigger group called the Radical Republican Party, led by Alejandro Lerroux.
Serving His City
Abad Conde was a councilman in his city many times. He even became the mayor of A Coruña between 1918 and 1919. In 1930, he was part of something called the Lestrove Pact. This was an agreement made in Lestrove, where politicians wanted to create a special group for the region of Galicia.
Becoming a Deputy
In 1931, he tried to become a deputy (like a representative in government) for A Coruña but wasn't chosen. However, a few months later, he was elected as a deputy for the province of Lugo.
Working for the Government
In July 1933, he was chosen to be part of the Tribunal de Garantías Constitucionales. This was a special court that made sure the country's laws followed the constitution.

While he was Minister of the Navy, Gerardo Abad Conde created a big plan to make the Spanish navy more modern. This plan was called the Plan Abad Conde. It was published in April 1936. The plan included building many new ships, such as:
- 12 torpedo boats
- 8 minesweepers
- 12 submarines
It also planned to improve existing ships, like cruisers and destroyers. This whole plan was going to cost a lot of money, about 450 million pesetas, and was meant to happen over five years. However, because of the economic and political problems at the time, the plan could not be fully carried out.
Later Life and Passing
In August 1935, Abad Conde left his role as Minister. He then became a university professor, teaching philosophy and law at the University of La Laguna in Tenerife. He later resigned from this job. In February 1936, he tried to be elected in the general elections again for the Radical Republican Party, but he was not chosen.
Later that year, when the Spanish Civil War began, Gerardo Abad Conde passed away in Madrid on September 10, 1936.
