Ghulam Mustafa Khan (born March 3, 1931 – died January 17, 2021) was a famous Indian classical singer. He was known for his beautiful voice in the Hindustani classical music style. He belonged to a special music family called the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana. A "Gharana" is like a school or a family tradition of music.
He received many high awards from the Indian government. These include the Padma Shri in 1991, the Padma Bhushan in 2006, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2018. In 2003, he also won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. This is the highest award for artists in India.

Early Life and Training
Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan was born in Badayun, a city in Uttar Pradesh, India. His family had a long history of music. His mother was the daughter of a great musician named Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan. Inayat Hussain Khan was also a musician for King Wajid Ali Shah.
Ghulam Mustafa Khan started learning music when he was very young. Both his parents wanted him to be a singer. He first learned from his father. Then, he was taught by Ustaad Fida Hussain Khan and later by Nissar Hussain Khan. Because of his training, his singing style included traditions from the Rampur, Gwalior, and Sahaswan Gharanas.
When he was only 8 years old, he gave his first public performance. This happened at a festival called Janmashtami. It was a special event where young musicians could show their talent for the first time.
A Remarkable Career
Ghulam Mustafa Khan had a long and successful career. He sang for many films, starting with a Marathi movie called 'Chand Pretticha'. He also sang for Hindi and Gujarati films. He even played the role of Baiju Bawra in a German movie. His voice was also heard in more than 70 documentary films. Many of these films won awards. He performed his music all over India and in many European countries.
He was also a respected teacher, known as a "guru." He taught many famous singers. Some of his students include Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, A. R. Rahman, Hariharan, Shaan, and Sonu Nigam. His four sons, Ghulam Murtuza, Ghulam Qadir, Rabbani Mustafa Khan, and Ghulam Hasan Khan, also became professional singers. They learned from him and have sung in movies like ‘Fiza’ and ‘Saathiya’. His grandsons, Faiz and Aamir, also learned music from him.
In 2013, he performed on a show called Coke Studio. He shared the stage with his former student, A. R. Rahman. His four sons and his grandson also joined them. It was a special performance with three generations of musicians.

Ghulam Mustafa Khan was married to Amina Begum. She was also from a musical family. Her grandfather was Padma Bhushan Mushtaq Hussain Khan. Ghulam Mustafa Khan and Amina Begum had four sons: Murtuza Mustafa, Qadir Mustafa, Rabbani Mustafa, and Hasan Mustafa.
Death
Ghulam Mustafa Khan passed away on January 17, 2021, at his home in Mumbai. He was 89 years old.
